Trump Targets Ontario with “Lake America” Remark Amid Rising Trade Tensions
U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social that he is considering renaming Lake Ontario to "Lake America," stating the U.S. does not expect to do much future business with the province as the trade war worsens. The rhetoric follows 50% U.S. tariffs on $20 billion of Canadian exports and threats of new auto tariffs, which Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney warned are designed to "destroy" key domestic industries. Canadian Minister Dominic LeBlanc declined to directly address Trump's post, affirming that Ottawa will not engage with daily social media comments as Canada prepares its own retaliatory measures.
